Our Story
History
SFRAWD was instituted as a public charitable society in 2014 and registered under the Tamil Nadu Societies Registration Act, 1975 (registration number 389/2014). The organization has since grown to over 10,000 registered members — women, girls with various disabilities, and mothers of children with disabilities — across the districts of Tamil Nadu. SFRAWD holds tax exemption under sections 12AA and 80G of the Income Tax Act, 1961.
Ms. Padma Venkatraman, President of the Women's Indian Association and daughter of former President of India R. Venkatraman, serves as Patron of the organization, offering continued support and guidance. She is widely recognized for her work on women's welfare and the rehabilitation of leprosy-affected persons.
Since inception, SFRAWD has focused on ensuring that women and girls with disabilities — among the most marginalized in their communities — can access their rights and be treated with equality and dignity. This work is carried out across all 33 districts of Tamil Nadu, through skill-building trainings, capacity-building workshops, vocational programs, livelihood support, government liaison for welfare schemes, assistive devices, and access to quality healthcare.
